How many groups are in World Cup 2026

The 2026 World Cup will feature an expanded format with a total of twelve groups. Each group will consist of four teams, making a total of 48 teams competing in the group stage. This is an increase from the previous tournaments, which had eight groups of four teams.

How many games do teams play in the group stage?

In the group stage each team will play three games, every team faces the other three teams once.

How do teams qualify for the next round?

The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams across all groups, will advance to the knockout stage, starting with a round of 32.

A win awards 3 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss 0 points. The teams are then ranked primarily by their total points (pts), followed by goal difference (gd), which is calculated as goals for (gf) minus goals against (ga). If teams are tied on points and goal difference, further tie-breakers such as goals scored, head-to-head results, and fair play points are applied to determine their position.

At the end of the group stage, the top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the round of 32. Additionally, the eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups also advance to the knockout stage, making the competition more inclusive compared to previous tournaments. Teams finishing in third place but not among the best eight, as well as those finishing fourth in their groups, are eliminated from the tournament.

How were World Cup groups decided?

The groups for World Cup 2026 were decided through an official draw ceremony conducted by FIFA. The 48 qualified teams were divided into four pots of twelve teams each. Pot 1 contained the three host nations - Canada, Mexico, and the United States - along with the top nine teams from the FIFA Men's World Ranking. Pots 2, 3, and 4 included the remaining teams, sorted according to their rankings.

During the draw, one team from each pot was randomly assigned to each group, creating twelve groups labeled from Group A to Group L. FIFA applies a general principle to avoid placing more than one team from the same confederation into a single group, except for UEFA teams, where each group can have one or two European teams. This method ensures competitive balance and geographical diversity across the groups.

The three host nations were pre-assigned to specific groups to facilitate scheduling: Mexico was placed in Group A, Canada in Group B, and the United States in Group D. The draw also considered competitive balance by separating the top-ranked teams so that some of the strongest teams, such as Spain, Argentina, France, and England, would not meet until the later stages of the tournament.
