Tottenham have completed their capture of Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli.

The stopper has signed up until 2028 in North London and will wear the No13 shirt after arriving in a deal worth a reported £16.4million.

Vicario, 26, made 71 appearances in all competitions for Empoli over the last two seasons — catching the eye with eight penalty saves — and has been called up to the Italy squad, though he has yet to earn a cap.

He is known for his ability at playing out from the back and should suit new boss Ange Postecoglou's style.

Spurs were in the market for a long-term successor to captain Hugo Lloris, who is approaching the final 12 months of his deal and is keen for a new challenge.

Brentford No1 David Raya was their top choice but the Bees' £40m valuation proved a stumbling block.

Vicario's chances of earning a starting spot will depend on Lloris' future, with Fraser Forster also signed up until the end of next season.

He is Postecoglou's second signing after Dejan Kulusevski's loan move was made permanent.

Tottenham are also believed to be closing in on a deal to bring James Maddison back to the Premier League following Leicester's relegation.

And talisman Harry Kane is the subject of strong interest from Bayern Munich, although the German giants' initial approach is thought to have come up well short of Daniel Levy's asking price.

Spurs are looking to bounce back from a poor 2022-23 campaign, which saw them finish eighth in the Premier League and miss out on European football.
