Tottenham 3-1 Brighton: Hosts come from behind to beat Seagulls
Grace Clinton scored the pick of the goals as Tottenham came from behind at the Amex Stadium to beat Brighton in the Women’s Super League.
Spurs have now defeated Brighton six times in the WSL, their highest number of wins against any opposition.
Elisabeth Terland put Brighton ahead early on with her third goal of the season but Martha Thomas levelled for Tottenham with almost the last kick of the first half. It was her fourth goal in as many games.
Clinton’s stunner put Spurs ahead for the first time before substitute Ria Percival struck a late third against a stretched defence.
For Brighton it was yet another failure to win at home, either at the Amex or Crawley Town’s Broadfield Stadium, a ninth defeat in their past 12 home games in the WSL.
Tottenham pressed early on and looked far more dangerous, coming closest to taking the lead when Ashleigh Neville’s well-hit shot was blocked.
But Brighton scored with their first attack after eight minutes. A slick move down their left won a corner and Terland rose unmarked at the near post to glance home a header from Maisie Symonds’ delivery.
Then Terland, receiving the ball from Julia Zigiotti, tried a shot on the turn from 20 yards that Becky Spencer had to watch all the way. Symonds launched a threatening run down the left but could not pick out a team-mate.
Tottenham, though, worked their way back into the game and in the 23rd minute Eveliina Summanen had a shot blocked in a goalmouth melee after Brighton failed to clear a corner.
In the 35th minute Thomas had a chance but drifted her shot over the crossbar.
For all their promising attacking play, the visitors had been unable to trouble Nicky Evrard, the Brighton goalkeeper. But that all changed in first-half added time.
First Thomas went through onto a pass from Drew Spence and forced the ball past the advancing goalkeeper only for Charlie Rule to hack the ball clear from a yard out.
But the reprieve was short-lived. Spence’s shot from distance rebounded from the crossbar and Thomas returned the ball into the net even though Evrard managed to get a hand to it.
Celin Bizet Ildhusoy might have given Spurs the lead soon after the restart but her shot on the turn was blocked by Rule.
Brighton’s half-time substitute Madison Haley had an excellent chance to restore Albion’s lead when found by a cross from captain Vicky Losada but put her header well past the post.
And instead of going ahead, they were behind after 65 minutes when England Under-23 star Clinton took a pass from Olga Ahtinen, turned and struck a fierce shot from 25 yards over Evrard and just under the crossbar.
Percival turned in the third with Brighton over-committed to their vain search for an equaliser.
