Tom Pidcock made it a hat-trick of gold medals for Great Britain on Monday with a powerful ride to victory in the men's mountain bike cross-country.

The 21-year-old from Leeds took control of the race at the halfway point, easing away from world No 1 Mathias Flueckiger of Switzerland and the chasing pack to complete a stunning few hours of action for Team GB.

Adam Peaty, 26, began the gold rush in the pool, winning Team GB’s first gold medal at Tokyo 2020 in the men’s 100m breaststroke.

It was the first time a British swimmer had successfully defended an Olympic title and merely underlined Peaty's complete dominance of the event in which he also holds the world record and has the top 16 fastest times to his name.

Peaty's peak performance was followed in the diving pool by British pair Tom Daley and Matty Lee.

Daley, 27, was making his fourth appearance in a Games while 23-year-old Lee was making his Olympics debut.

The dynamic duo held off a strong challenge from China's Cao Yuan and Chen Aisen in the men's synchronised 10m platform diving to clinch gold.

Hosts Japan overtook China at the top of the medals table after Monday's events were concluded.

There was joy for 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya who won gold in the women's street skateboarding and in the judo Shohei Ono took top prize in the men's 73kg category.

In table tennis, the mixed doubles team of Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito overcame China's Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen, ensuring that Japan had three gold medals for the day while China failed to add to their overnight tally.

There was also a three-gold haul for the Russian Olympic Committee who are now fourth in the medals table.
