Everton missed the chance to widen the gap between them and the relegation zone to seven points as they lost 2-0 to Southampton at St. Mary's.
The Toffees were lucky to make it to half time level with Jordan Pickford making six saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Saints finally made their dominance pay in the 52nd minute as Stuart Armstrong placed a low effort inside the near post after being found by Che Adams.
The hosts doubled their lead with five minutes remaining as substitute Shane Long rose above Seamus Coleman to nod a right-wing cross past a helpless Pickford.
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl hailed his men for their performance — particularly after the break.
He said: "The best moment in a home game is when you go around celebrating a win together after a hard-working win. The more you work, the more you enjoy the win.
"We had a strong opponent, we faced a lot of energy in the first half and new belief. They tried to stress us early, it was hard to release the pressure.
"After the first 15 minutes we found a better game and had a few counter-attacks. We said at half-time that we had to keep the tempo high and the moments would come. The guys did a fantastic job."
Meanwhile, Everton manager Frank Lampard was disappointed he was with his team's second-half showing.
He said: "The first half was not fantastic, the first 15-20 minutes were okay and we might have been ahead.
"In the second half, we were not right. The things they want to do, win the ball back in midfield and counter, we gifted that to them.
"Afterwards I did not like the reaction. I am here for a reason because we are down in a position we don't want to be in.
"In the two games at Goodison I have seen some really good things, in the two games away, not so much.
"The players need to understand that the second half is not good enough. It is not good enough to lose second balls consistently, it is not good enough to try and miss out [the midfield] and play to the strikers.
"It has to be an option but it can't be the way we play. We will have days like this. It is important to learn the lessons.
"I had to speak to them because I have been very positive and as staff we have had an uplift but today we drifted back into being a team I don't want us to be so the players need to hear it. You learn more from a defeat than a win."
