Notts County boosted their automatic promotion hopes with a 2-1 win over Gillingham at Priestfield.

Two first-half goals in quick succession from Nick Tsaraoulla and David McGoldrick put the Magpies in control and, despite, a late charge from the hosts, they held out for all three points.

Glenn Morris made a magnificent save to deny County on 16 minutes when Alassana Jatta’s effort from close range was clawed around the post by the Gills veteran.

However, from the resulting corner, Tsaroulla reacted first to a second ball and tapped home from close range.

County added a second shortly afterwards with McGoldrick pouncing on a defensive interception in the final third, and he simply lifted the ball over the oncoming Morris.

Jodi Jones nearly made it three before the break, but his free-kick from 25 yards struck the side netting.

Gills asked more questions in the second half and set up a tense finish when sub Joe Gbode headed home Armani Little’s corner, but Stuart Maynard’s men hung on to win.
