Newcastle’s Champions League dream came to an end with Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Italian giants AC Milan at St James' Park, which was the Magpies’ third straight defeat in all competitions.

Three days on and Eddie Howe’s side must dust themselves down and prepare for the visit of Fulham, who are in a rich vein of goalscoring form.

Newcastle have often been vulnerable on the back of a midweek European match but they are a formidable force at St James' Park and will be determined to boost morale after their Champions League exit.

Seven of Newcastle’s eight Premier League home games this season have resulted in victory and, although the Cottagers are in decent touch, the Magpies will be buoyed by the fact that only one of the visitors’ six league wins has come on the road.

Howe’s men sit seventh in the table, some seven points off of the top four, so anything other than a win would be seen as another disappointment.

The injury situation remains a serious one for Newcastle, who are still without first-team members Nick Pope and Sven Botman as well as Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Elliott Anderson, Matt Targett and Javier Manquillo. 

Sandro Tonali and Kieran Trippier are both suspended for the Magpies.

Fulham have greater resources currently at their disposal with Issa Diop and Adama Traore their only confirmed absentees. 

Brazilian winger Willian is an injury doubt after limping off in last Sunday’s 5-0 win at home to West Ham and must be assessed.

The Magpies have kept clean sheets in five of their last six league matches at St James' Park.

Fulham have won three of their last four league matches, bolstered by an impressive tally of 16 goals during that period.

However, each of those successes came at Craven Cottage and they have been less convincing away from home, having failed to win any of their last seven league matches on their travels.

Both teams have scored in five of Fulham’s last seven Premier League away games.

Prediction

There is no time for Newcastle to dwell on their disappointing midweek defeat to Milan with three massive games coming in the next seven days.

Howe will be demanding his side to respond quickly and positively and, armed with home advantage, they are taken to have Fulham’s measure.

Their injury situation is far from ideal but their home league record of seven wins from eight games is hard to ignore, as is the price they are available at, especially when considering the scalps they have already claimed.

Fulham, having recorded back-to-back 5-0 wins at home to Nottingham Forest and West Ham, are in blistering form and are not taken lightly.

But the Cottagers have had little to celebrate away, where they have taken only six points from a possible 24.

Fulham have conceded five goals away at Manchester City, four at Liverpool and three on their trip to Aston Villa, so Newcastle should be confident of exploiting those frailties.
