Marc Skinner says Manchester United are heading into Sunday's derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford with players who are accustomed to and thrive on the big occasion.

The match, for which more than 45,000 tickets have been sold, will be the first Women's Super League clash between the clubs to take place at the stadium.

Boss Skinner told a press conference: "The reality is the players we have signed this year are used to big occasions.

"They thrive in those environments. I'm looking forward to seeing who rises on Sunday."

While United are unbeaten in the WSL so far this term with 12 points from six games, City are two points worse off, having seen a strong start halted by defeats to Arsenal and Brighton in their last two matches.

City boss Gareth Taylor — for whom defender Alex Greenwood is back available after a head injury sustained on England duty — said: "Two games ago we were top of the league and now we sit sixth. I think this is really important in our title challenge. You don't want to lose too much ground.

"Remaining unbeaten now is the objective for the rest of the season. That's what I want to see with the players and I've seen it this week, I've seen in the whites of their eyes that they're ready for this game."

A point better off than United are Arsenal, whose last outing was a remarkable contest at Leicester in which they were two goals down at half-time before going on to win 6-2.

The Gunners take on a Brighton outfit on something of a roll, having held United 2-2 before then beating City 1-0 last Sunday.

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall said: "If you go into the WSL this season and you are complacent towards any game, I think you must have been sleeping and not watching any games from the last season and seen the progression.

"This is the most competitive WSL season there has ever been and that will show in every game."
