An unforgettable PDC World Darts Championship reaches its climax on Wednesday and new world number one Luke Humphries will be desperate to add the crown to his just-secured status as the best player around.

However, 16-year-old Luke Littler could have plenty to say about that after storming through to the final and dispatching former champion Rob Cross in Tuesday’s semi-final and there is little doubt that the bumper Alexandra Palace crowd would love to see the fairytale completed.

But aside from the storyline, Littler has produced some stunning darts and it looks as if there is all to play for in the battle to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy.

The stats

Littler has averaged more than 100 in four of his six Ally Pally outings.

Humphries is one of six players in this year’s tournament to have a 170 checkout.

Humphries' semi-final average of 108.74 was the highest of this year’s competition.

Humphries, who is undefeated in his last 18 games, has conceded just one leg in his last two matches.

Prediction

A look at the statistics suggests we could be in for a high-scoring final on Wednesday and while a lot of the emotional support will come in for Littler, it is the new world number one who could be leaving with the trophy.

While Littler has understandably grabbed all the headlines at Alexandra Palace this year, Humphries looks to be coming good at the right time after a couple of scares in the earlier rounds.

Cool Hand had to drag himself off the floor and 3-1 down to overcome Germany’s Ricardo Pietreczko in the last-32 and then won a sudden-death leg decider against Joe Cullen in the following round.

But just when it seemed he was struggling, Humphries has found his second wind and, after easing past Dave Chisnell in the quarter-finals, his demolition job on Scott Williams in Tuesday’s semi-final suggests he could be one step too far for the sensational Warrington teenager.

Littler has done nothing wrong in getting to this stage and was superb against Cross, but he could struggle to keep up with Humphries if the number three seed continues in the same vein as he did against Williams.

Humphries could stretch away if he establishes an early advantage, so him winning his first Sid Waddell Trophy by at least a two-set margin looks the way forward.
