LiveScore Racing News: Torquator Tasso aimed at Arc title defence
Torquator Tasso's connections have revealed there will be no further races for the four-year-old this season and the focus is on being ready for a defence of his Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe title next year.
The Marcel Weiss-trained star produced a stunning display last Sunday to send shockwaves around the racing world to win the prestigious Longchamp race.
In the 100th running of Europe's richest race, the German outsider, ridden by Rene Piechulek, beat some of the biggest names in racing to claim the title.
Tarnawa and Hurricane Lane were well-fancied before the off but had to settle for second and third respectively across the Channel.
Even Derby and King George winner Adayar was no match for Torquator Tasso, as the Charlie Appleby charge tired in the final furlong before finishing in fourth place.
What was even more impressive was the fact this is only the second year for handler Weiss with a licence.
From his base outside of Mulheim, the private trainer for owner Gestut Auenquelle seems to have learned plenty from Jens Hershberger, having previously worked as his assistant.
As the dust continues to settle for Torquator Tasso, an 80/1 shot for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, connections are already considering the long-term plans for this new kid on the block.
There was some consideration of a potential run in Asia for the Japan Cup, but it has been decided a well-earned break is in order for the Adlerflug colt.
All eyes are on what Torquator Tasso can do in 2022 and Julia Romich, a representative of Weiss's stable, has confirmed the aim is to come back to Longchamps and try to defend the Arc title in 12 months' time.
She said: "The Marcel Weiss stable thanks everyone for this unforgettable day Sunday at Longchamp.
"Torquator Tasso will not run again this year. His owners have resisted the temptation to go to the Group One Japan Cup so that he can rest up for next year.
"The objective is to defend his title in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. As such, we will come back to Longchamp next year."
Meanwhile, Tarnawa's trainer Dermot Weld has also outlined his own plans for his charge following that runner-up place in the Arc.
All being well with her recovery from the efforts at Longchamp over the weekend, the highly-rated mare could now be aimed at a run out in November, in a defence of her Breeders' Cup Turf crown.
Speaking about Tarnawa's run in the Arc, Weld said: "I honestly believe if we didn't have all the rain we had last night, she would have won. Second is a lonely place."
