Man City 7-0 Tottenham: Shaw hat-trick inspires thumping win
Khadija Shaw scored a first-half hat-trick before Laura Coombs came off the bench to score a late double as Manchester City thrashed Tottenham 7-0 in their Women’s Super League clash on Sunday evening.
City built on a fast start which saw Shaw head the opener before two more well-taken goals in the space of seven minutes ripped Spurs apart as their eight-match unbeaten run was left in tatters.
Any hopes of a comeback were dashed at the start of the second half when the impressive Lauren Hemp curled in a fourth.
Jill Roord’s header and a late brace from substitute Coombs completed a comfortable win which sees City consolidate third place going into the international break.
City showed early intent as Filippa Angeldahl sent a glancing header wide after Hemp broke down the left to float the ball across the Spurs penalty area.
Gareth Taylor’s side, who had beaten rivals Manchester United 3-1 last weekend, broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute.
Leila Ouahabi sent in a fine cross from the left, which Shaw met with a towering header past Rebecca Spencer.
Tottenham looked to mount a response but were carved open again just after the half-hour mark.
City continued to find space out wide on the left and this time Dutch international Roord’s low cross was nodded home by Shaw from inside the six-yard box.
Before Spurs could regroup Shaw had her third goal in the 38th minute.
Laia Aleixandri swept the ball in from the right, which Shaw chested down before turning to rifle a low drive into the bottom corner for her sixth league goal of the season.
Tottenham boss Robert Vilahamn made a change for the start of the second half, with forward Rosella Ayane coming on for Zhang Linyan.
City, though, soon extended their lead when Hemp curled the ball into the top corner after 48 minutes to put to bed any hopes of a Spurs comeback.
When Spurs did created a rare opening as Martha Thomas raced clear her low shot was too close to trouble City goalkeeper Khiara Keating.
Roord nodded in a fifth for City at the back post in the 53rd minute from Hemp’s looping cross.
Substitute Coombs had not long been sent on before she brought up number six as the hour approached following more good work from Hemp.
It was almost seven when Alex Greenwood’s well-struck shot crashed against the crossbar.
Taylor made some more changes late on before Coombs blasted the ball into the top corner in stoppage time for her second goal as City headed into the international break back a point above rivals United.
