New Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol believes he has joined the best team in world football.

Pep Guardiola has finally landed his man after Croatian defender Gvardiol, 21, joined the Citizens on a five-year deal from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

And having dreamed of a move to England for many years, the youngster believes there was no place better to head than the Etihad.

Gvardiol told City's website: "I have always dreamed of one day playing in England and to be doing so now with Manchester City — after the season they have just had — is a real honour for me.

"Anyone who saw Manchester City play last season knows they are the best team in the world. To win the Treble says everything you need to know about the quality this team has.

"To be joining City is something very special for me and my family. To have the chance to work with Pep Guardiola, too, will be amazing.

"I know I am not yet the finished article and I am sure my game will progress under the best coach in football.

The deal also sees the 21-cap ace link up with an international team-mate in Mateo Kovacic, who joined City from domestic rivals Chelsea back in June.

He added: "To be linking up with Mateo will also be special. He’s a top footballer and I hope we can both help City achieve another successful season in 2023-24 and beyond."

Gvardiol departs Leipzig after two seasons in Germany, making 87 appearances for the Red Bulls in all competitions.

Having starred as Croatia secured an unlikely third-place finish at the 2022 World Cup, the youngster is already renowned as one of the best ball-playing defenders in Europe.

In keeping with other members of Pep's rearguard, the Zagreb-born talent is capable at centre-back or full-back so will likely be deployed in various roles during his time with the European champions.
