Joe Root admitted England were below par in all departments as they were thrashed by New Zealand in the opening match of the Cricket World Cup.
Jos Buttler lost the toss and saw his side put in to bat by the Kiwis' stand-in captain Tom Latham, where they made only 282-9 on a good batting surface in Ahmedabad.
Root top scored for England with 77 but his contribution was all in vain as New Zealand racked up 283-1 in just 36.2 overs, Devon Conway (152*) and Rachin Ravindra (123*) dispatching the bowlers to all parts of the ground.
After the defeat, Root told Sky Sports: "We were below par in all departments.
"Batting wise, I don't think we had the best of the conditions. It definitely got better to bat as the game progressed.
"But it's still disappointing because we did manage to build partnerships but as soon as we get going we kept stalling ourselves and that stopped us getting the total we wanted.
"In the field, when you know you've got a below-par score, you've then got to be above par in everything you do and we didn't manage that.
"We didn't play anywhere near the standard that we know we are capable of."

But Root was also keen to stress England have plenty of time to bounce back, with the first opportunity to do so coming against Bangladesh next Tuesday in the second of their nine group matches.
He added: "It's a frustrating day but it's important to remember that there is so much cricket to come in this tournament.
"We won't panic, we've just got to reaffirm what we're about as a team and go more about our way of playing in the next game.
"The first game of a tournament is always a cagey affair. We got our score on the board. But credit to them, they played really well and we underperformed.
"We're a better side than that, we know that, and we've got plenty of opportunities to put that right."
