Sinner vs Safiullin predictions: Impressive Italian can ease into the last four

&w=707&quality=100)
- Jannik Sinner has lost only three of his last 14 grass-court matches
- Jannik Sinner has won three of his four Wimbledon assignments in straight sets
- Recommended bet: Jannik Sinner to win 3-0
Having suffered a five-set defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of last year’s Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner will be determined to overcome that hurdle and make the last four for the first time with victory over Roman Safiullin.
Now firmly settled inside the world’s top 10, the 21-year-old is appearing in his fifth Grand Slam quarter-final and is a red-hot favourite to make his maiden Major semi-final by beating the Russian world No92.
Sinner’s game has looked well suited to the grass — he has dropped only one set in recording his opening four wins at the All England Club — and many believe he is a Wimbledon champion of the future.
Safiullin, meanwhile, is a late bloomer with the 25-year-old having reached the quarter-finals despite featuring in the main draw of a Grand Slam for only the fifth time in his career.
The stats
Sinner is featuring in the Wimbledon quarter-final for the second year in a row and he thrives on this surface, having lost only three of his last 14 grass-court matches.
It has been pretty easy work at the All England Club for the Italian 21-year-old, who has dropped only one set across his four matches — that four-set victory came in round three against big-serving Frenchman Quentin Halys.
Sinner has eased to straight-set wins over Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Diego Schwartzman and Daniel Elahi Galan, although he has yet to face a player ranked inside the world’s top 70.
Safiullin has already accounted for two seeded players on his run to the last eight, having defeated world number 20 Roberto Bautista Agut in a five-set thriller in round one as well as seeing off 26th seed Denis Shapovalov in four sets last time out.
This is Safiullin’s first match against a top-10 player on the grass, so a career-best performance will be required, and his only previous encounter with Sinner at the ATP Cup in January of last year saw him soundly beaten 7-6 6-3.
Prediction
Sinner has been pretty blessed with his route to the last eight at Wimbledon and he should seal a semi-final spot with an authoritative victory over world No92 Safiullin.
The highest ranked player the Italian has played so far in the London Major has been world No79 Halys and that was the only occasion he dropped a set.
Otherwise it has been an extremely convincing tournament from the grass-loving Sinner, who is serving superbly and has been broken only four times throughout the event.
Safiullin can be proud of his achievements at the All England Club and he is not taken lightly, especially following wins over seeded players Bautista Agut and Shapovalov.
However, neither of those players are the most consistent and they do not boast the grass-court credentials of Sinner, who did win in straight sets when these two met last season.
Sinner has won three of his four Wimbledon assignments 3-0 and he can repeat the trick against the Russian.
