In Focus: Rating Ten Hag’s Manchester United signings so far
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag delivered an education in how to rebuild a squad this summer.
Arriving in June, the Dutchman lured six new faces to Old Trafford before the transfer window slammed shut.
Following his side's 1-0 win at Leicester, we roll back the years to give United’s new recruits the school report card treatment.
Tyrell Malacia (Feyenoord, £13million)
Ten Hag’s first addition as United boss, the left-back was not expected to be a star pupil but has quietly excelled in his early weeks in England.
An infectious personality with a strong work ethic, he has settled into his new surroundings seamlessly and was top of the class in the unexpected 2-1 victory over Liverpool.
His £13million fee already looks like good maths by United chiefs and the youngster must now continue setting a good example to those around him.
LiveScore grade: A-
Christian Eriksen (Brentford, free)
Signing the popular Dane on a free transfer looked shrewd but improvement is needed after a mixed start at Old Trafford.
The midfield maestro’s character cannot be faulted but his concentration levels have been found wanting on occasion — especially in the 4-0 horror show at former club Brentford.
Needs to pull his socks up quickly and avoid being dragged down by his peers.
LiveScore grade: D
Lisandro Martinez (Ajax, £57million)
Was the popular kid at Ajax but found himself the victim of some serious bullying from Brentford striker Ivan Toney and was subbed off at half-time in that drubbing.
Impressive showings against Liverpool and Southampton respectively have restored faith though and his aerial duel win percentage of 83% after four games defies the laws of physics.
A determined attitude could take 5ft9in defender a long way but he still has plenty to prove in a fresh environment.
LiveScore grade: C+
Casemiro (Real Madrid, £70million)
Educated at one of world football’s most prestigious schools, the Brazilian midfielder can become one of the Premier League’s shining lights if he applies himself.
Confident and composed in his work, the 30-year-old does not always take the conventional route but is proven to be very reliable in getting things done.
Will need to keep a fiery temper in check if he is to avoid racking up detentions but generally manages to channel that anger into strong performances.
LiveScore grade: B
Antony (Ajax, £85million)
A former star pupil of Ten Hag’s back in the Netherlands, this talented youngster looks destined for big things.
He arrives with glowing references after dazzling on a domestic and European stage but still needs to prove he can handle the extra demands coming his way.
Too early to make a concrete assessment but on potential alone, he looks destined for great things.
LiveScore grade: B+
Martin Dubravka (Newcastle, loan)
Surprise late arrival after moving house a few weeks into the new term.
Could take some time to settle but his arrival will at least ensure David de Gea does homework to avoid losing his place in the pecking order.
Not a star pupil but is a safer pair of hands who will not be a disruptive influence.
LiveScore grade: C
