Boss Gareth Taylor hailed Manchester City's mentality after they beat West Ham 2-0 on the opening weekend of the Women's Super League season.
Second-half goals from Lauren Hemp and summer signing Jill Roord ensured City got off to a winning start, even though Chloe Kelly missed a penalty and they lost Leila Ouahabi to a red card.
The visitors also preserved their 100% away record at West Ham in the WSL by making it five wins from five games.
Taylor, 50, said: "Our performance was really good. When we were down to 10 players, I was super impressed with what we did.
"We controlled the game really well. I felt in the first half we were very good in our build-up play and just needed to tidy up our final action.
"I like the way the players reacted between the first and second goal.
"When you miss a penalty, it can sometimes affect the mentality of the players and I felt the mentality was so good across the pitch."
Former Wolfsburg midfielder Roord, 26, impressed on her debut and Taylor was full of praise for the Netherlands international.
He said: "It's a testament to the players we have at the club and how quickly Jill settled into the team.
"The players were really warm and engaging. If you are a good person like Jill is, you have a real chance of bonding quickly.
"You see the chemistry between the players and they looked like they've played together for four or five years."
City were without Khadija Shaw — their top goalscorer last season with 31 goals across all competitions — due to injury.
Taylor added: "If you take one City player out of the starting line-up that will hurt it is Shaw. But we have got players who step up and do really well."
New Hammers boss Rehanne Skinner said: "The way we applied ourselves and managed huge chunks of the game shows significant progress since I arrived.
"We have to be very good out of possession as much as in possession. I have a good view of what the team is about."
