The jury is still out

Roy Keane believes Erik ten Hag has a battle on his hands to stay at Manchester United. 

Speculation has been rife following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's partial takeover at Old Trafford that Ten Hag is on borrowed time.

And United legend Keane admits yesterday's Manchester derby defeat to arch-rivals City will not have helped the 54-year-old Dutchman's cause.

The Sky Sports pundit said: "That's 11 league losses now for United. That's one scary stat and what City do is they find out all your shortcomings.

"When you're out on that pitch and it's tough, there's no hiding place. It's like in boxing. City wore and wore them down.

"It still leaves that question mark over where this United team are going. In the last 25 minutes, they couldn't get anywhere near City, who toyed with them.

"There's still question marks of this team and unfortunately of the manager."

Time to lift the Blues

Djordje Petrovic insists Chelsea will do everything possible to get back to winning ways in the Premier League at Newcastle next Monday.

The keeper cut a frustrated figure as Saturday's 2-2 draw against Brentford saw the Blues miss the opportunity to build on their FA Cup win over Leeds.

But Petrovic, 24, is confident better times are to come as Mauricio Pochettino's men bid to mount a late challenge to secure European qualification.

Speaking to Chelsea's official website, he said: "We were in control in the first half but we conceded two goals in the second and had a fight on our hands.

"Credit to Brentford, they played a good game but we are not happy because our goal was to win.

"We must focus on the next game and putting it right against Newcastle. With the game being on Monday night, we have a lot of time to recover and focus on what we need to do to get three points.

"We have big games coming up in both the Premier League and the FA Cup and there is still so much for us to achieve this season."

Chelsea currently sit 11th in the table on 36 points after picking up just 10 wins and six draws from 26 games.

Robins struggling to fly

Lauren Smith has challenged her players to silence their critics after they were thumped 7-3 at home by Women's Super League rivals Brighton.

The rock-bottom Robins are staring relegation in the face having lost 11 of their 15 league games to leave them six points adrift of safety.

And Smith is adamant there can be no repeat of the capitulation at Ashton Gate. She said: "Everybody knew this was a big game and a big moment.

"We were already up against it and now we are really, really up against it.

"We've been looking at it since the start that we were already the relegated team in many people's minds.

"We put up a fight to show we could do something about it and now I'd say we are the relegated team again.

"There's only one way out of it to prove everybody wrong. It's a big challenge and a mountain, not one that is numerically impossible.

"But if we don't put 90 minutes in the tank defending then it is numerically impossible."

Uphill battle

Bruno Fernandes admits it is going to be tough for Manchester United to qualify for the Champions League.

An unbeaten start to 2024 came to an abrupt halt at home to Fulham last month and was compounded by another Premier League defeat against arch-rivals Manchester City yesterday.

Marcus Rashford put unfancied United into a shock lead at the Etihad, only for a Phil Foden brace and a stoppage-time Erling Haaland strike to seal a 3-1 win for the hosts.

And skipper Fernandes, 29, said: "We want to be in the Champions League, we want to try until the end of the season to get into that fourth place.

"We know it's going to be hard but we have to do everything we can."

Cambridge put faith in Monk

Cambridge have appointed former Sheffield United and Leeds boss Garry Monk as their new head coach.

Monk, 44, replaces Neil Harris, who quit after just 17 games in charge to return to Millwall.

Paul Barry, majority owner of the League One side, said: "He is a coach of high pedigree, has managed at the top level and impressed us all with his leadership skills, clarity of thinking and his analysis of Cambridge United — both the squad and the club.

"Although he has had opportunities to get back into the game over recent times, he has been waiting for the right one.

"Like us, he sees this as a project and we are pleased he has decided to join us on the journey ahead."
