Alderweireld heroics

Ex-Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld struck a last-minute equaliser as Royal Antwerp won their first Belgian top-flight title in 66 years on Sunday.

Alderweireld, who was born in Antwerp and signed for his boyhood club last summer, provided the final moment of drama on a day in which three different teams had the trophy in their grasp within the final few minutes of action.

Union St-Gilloise's late collapse against Club Brugge opened the door for Antwerp's opponents Genk but the defender's 25-yard rocket saw the Reds crowned champions instead.

Alderweireld said: "I have no words for this. Everybody wrote us off.

"Everyone was against us, but we did it today."

It is Alderweireld's first league winners' medal since he played 12 matches in Atletico Madrid's La Liga triumph in 2014.

Abraham anguish

Tammy Abraham looks to have suffered a serious ACL injury

Tammy Abraham was taken off in tears after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Roma on the final day of the Serie A season.

The England international came off the bench in the 63rd minute of the match against Spezia but soon left the field with what is suspected to be an ACL problem.

Should the former Chelsea man be out of action for a considerable period, his chances of a summer move back to the Premier League after a disappointing campaign in Italy would be scuppered.

The 25-year-old has scored nine goals in 53 appearances this term.

The Impossible Job

Sam Allardyce and Karl Robinson could not keep Leeds in the Premier League
Sam Allardyce and Karl Robinson could not keep Leeds in the Premier League

Sam Allardyce's Leeds assistant Karl Robinson has claimed that saving the club from Premier League relegation was an "impossible job".

Allardyce, Robinson and Robbie Keane were the staff given four matches to save the Whites from the drop, but managed to take just one point from their games in charge.

And Robinson, 42, has claimed they would have needed a longer run at the job to stand a chance, saying: "It was an almost impossible job but we all have that ego going in and plotting a miracle.

"That's not naivety or stupidity, we thought we could do it even though we knew it would be so difficult."

Leeds are searching for a new manager after confirming the departure of Allardyce but Robinson is unlikely to be considered for the role.

Bullish Beckham

David Beckham says that the treble-winning team of 1999 can not be topped

David Beckham has claimed that the Manchester United's 1999 Treble-winning feat can never be topped — even if Manchester City complete the same set of trophies in the Champions League final this weekend.

Beckham, 48, was part of the Class of '92, a group of homegrown Red Devils players at the heart of that team's success.

And the former England international believes that were Pep Guardiola to lead City to success in Istanbul on Saturday, it still would not be as impressive as what was achieved 24 years ago.

Beckham said: "There’s only one club that can ever win the first time — and we were that club.

"We were all homegrown players that had lived and breathed United all the way through and then to win the treble, the way we won it, and also for the first time, can never be done again."

Chelsea look for winning Formula

Chelsea stars kicked off their summer break with a trip to the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount all featured on Sky Sports' coverage of the event, with James expressing his disappointment at a poor season at Stamford Bridge.

The England international said: "It's been a tough year. We've had lots of injuries and we didn't finish in the best position. Hopefully next year is better."

On the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, he added: "Everyone is saying he's great and hopefully next year we find out feet early and we're a good, strong side."

Mount looks set to leave Chelsea this summer and on his team-mate's potential departure, James said: "Of course, if he goes, everybody will be sad to see him go."

Charlie Methven, star of Netflix documentary 'Sunderland 'Til I die', has agreed a takeover of Charlton Athletic.

His company SE7 Partners will buy 100% of the club from former owner Thomas Sandgaard, subject to EFL approval.

Club chief executive Peter Storrie said: "We'll now work with the EFL to meet the league requirements.

"In the meantime our day-to-day running of the club will not be impacted.

"Our preparation and recruitment for the 2023-24 season is well under way."
