Sad news

Former Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter Milan star Sinisa Mihajlovic has died aged 53.

The Serbian-born defender and midfielder, who won 63 caps for Yugoslavia and helped Red Star Belgrade win the European Cup in 1991, had been battling leukaemia.

A statement issued by the Italian top flight said: "Serie A is deeply saddened by the passing of Sinisa Mihajlovic, an icon of football and life.

"His pure class as a footballer and coach, his strength and his humanity are an example that leaves an indelible mark on Italian and world football."

The Serbian FA added: "Football has lost too soon a champion of Europe and the world.

"One of the best performers of free-kicks in the history of football, player, coach and selector, a man who left a deep mark in the history of Serbian and Italian football with his career."

After hanging up his boots in 2006, Mihajlovic went on to manage a host of clubs, including AC Milan, and was most recently in charge at Bologna.

Under the weather

France are trying to prevent a sickness bug spreading through their squad ahead of Sunday's World Cup final showdown with Argentina.

Question marks surround the availability of a handful of Les Bleus players, with some being made to isolate in their rooms at the team's base in Qatar.

Midfielder Adrien Rabiot was absent for Wednesday's 2-0 semi-final win over Morocco, while Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman have also been unwell.

Defenders Raphael Varane and Ibrahima Konate have reportedly been affected by illness as well.

Forward Randal Kolo Muani said: "I think there is a flu going around — it’s nothing too serious and they will be fine I think for Sunday.

"Everyone is being careful. The doctors have put in place a hygiene system to avoid the virus spreading.

"The sick players are in their rooms. We're washing our hands all the time and we try and keep the social distancing thing in place. We're very strict on these rules."

Time for a rethink

Gianni Infantino admits it is time for a rethink about the format of the next World Cup

Gianni Infantino has confirmed FIFA will review the format of the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico is due to consist of 16 three-team groups, with the top two from each progressing to the knockout phase.

But FIFA president Infantino, 52, said: "I have to say after this World Cup, and the success of the groups of four, we have to revisit or rediscuss the format whether we go for 16 groups of three or 12 groups of four."

TeamViewer's name and logo will soon be a thing of the past on the front of Manchester United shirts
TeamViewer's name and logo will soon be a thing of the past on the front of Manchester United shirts

Manchester United are in the market for a new shirt sponsorship deal after agreeing to end their tie-up with TeamViewer.

The German company, who signed a five-year contract to replace Chevrolet in March 2021, will keep their name on United's kits until a replacement is found.

A club statement said: "After a period of collaborative, private discussions over the past months, Manchester United and TeamViewer AG have reached a mutually-beneficial agreement under which Manchester United shall have the option to buy back the rights to the club's shirt front sponsorship.

"Having agreed its partnership with TeamViewer at the height of the pandemic, Manchester United will be taking the opportunity to commence a focused sales process for a new shirt front partner in a normalised market.

"Once a new shirt front partner is selected and takes on this role, TeamViewer will continue as a valued member of Manchester United's suite of global partners, providing remote connectivity solutions, until the end of the original contract term in 2026."

Snow joke

The cold snap gripping the United Kingdom has resulted in a number of this weekend's Football League matches being postponed.

Luton's clash with Millwall on Sunday is the only Championship fixture to be sunk by a frozen pitch so far — but the lower divisions have fared less well.

In League One, Port Vale's game with Accrington Stanley and Peterborough's showdown with Shrewsbury have been called off, while eight League Two games have succumbed to the freezing conditions.

With snow forecast to fall on large parts of the UK in the next 48 hours, more fixtures are expected to be lost.

Postponed EFL fixtures

Championship: Luton vs Millwall
League One: Peterborough vs Shrewsbury, Port Vale vs Accrington Stanley
League Two: AFC Wimbledon vs Stevenage, Colchester vs Salford, Hartlepool vs Newport, Mansfield vs Grimsby, Northampton vs Carlisle (rearranged for Tuesday, December 20, 19.45pm GMT), Stockport vs Gillingham, Tranmere vs Crawley, Walsall vs Crewe
