David Artell’s Grimsby produce big statement win over Port Vale
Grimsby moved up to fifth in League Two with a statement 3-0 home victory over promotion rivals Port Vale.
Cameron McJannet, Doug Tharme and Jason Dadi Svanthorsson struck to take the Mariners level on points with second-placed Notts County, Doncaster and Vale.
Vale had an early sight at goal when Rico Richards managed to break through to the edge of the box, curling a shot that Jordan Wright palmed away.
Jayden Luker tested Connor Ripley at the other end as he cut in from the right flank and fired a shot that was creeping in at the near post.
The hosts took the lead in the 29th minute through centre-back McJannet, who charged in at the back post to knock in Jordan Davies’ looping cross.
Connor Hall forced a diving save from Wright in the second half as the ball was headed into his path on the edge of the box.
Grimsby pulled further ahead in the 81st minute as substitute Tharme headed in from a Denver Hume free-kick.
Svanthorsson added a third in stoppage time to cap off a resounding victory for the Mariners.
