Swiss Darts Trophy 2026: Bunting Aims to Defend His Crown as European Championship Race Heats Up

The gloves are off in Basel as 48 players descend on Switzerland for three days of high-stakes darts, with silverware, serious prize money and European Championship qualification on the line.
The 2026 Swiss Darts Trophy gets underway on Friday, October 9, at the St Jakobshalle, with defending champion Stephen Bunting looking to retain his crown against a field packed with former world champions and rising stars.
The tournament is the penultimate stop on the 2026 PDC European Tour, adding extra pressure for players chasing qualification for the European Championship later this month.
Bunting back for more
Bunting returns to Basel having demolished Luke Woodhouse 8-3 in last year's final, securing his maiden Swiss Darts Trophy title.
The seventh seed enters Saturday's second round against either Jeffrey de Graaf or Sietse Lap, with a potential route to another deep run awaiting.
However, the competition is fierce.
Newly crowned World Grand Prix champion Luke Humphries arrives as top seed following his comeback victory over Gerwyn Price in last weekend's final.
Humphries faces Kevin Doets or Nick Kenny in his opening match, while five-time world champion Michael van Gerwen meets either Mensur Suljovic or Gyorgy Jehirszki.
Gian van Veen, Jonny Clayton, James Wade and Josh Rock are among the other seeded contenders.
Big names, big stakes
Friday's opening round features several intriguing clashes, including former world champion Rob Cross against Mario Vandenbogaerde and Raymond van Barneveld facing Maik Kuivenhoven.
Michael Smith also returns to European Tour action against Rob Owen, while Dave Chisnall takes on Alan Soutar.
With £230,000 in total prize money available, including £35,000 for the winner, there is plenty riding on every match.
Crucially, European Tour earnings determine qualification for the European Championship, scheduled for October 22-25.
That leaves players chasing ranking points with precious few opportunities to secure their places before the cut-off.
