Brighton win council support for new women's stadium
Brighton's bid to build a new stadium for their women's team has received the full backing of the city's council.
The Seagulls have competed in the Women's Super League since 2018 but Crawley's Broadfield Stadium is their regular home.
It has been the club's long-standing ambition to move the side to a local venue and a motion supporting the plan has now been passed by Brighton and Hove City Council.
Seagulls boss Melissa Phillips said: "It's encouraging the council are supporting their motion to help us find a suitable location to return to the city.
"This is another massive first step in our journey back to Brighton and we're excited for what is ahead for this club, community and team."
Appetite for women's football in the city is showcased by the nearly 7,000 supporters that flocked to the Amex to watch Brighton face Tottenham earlier this month.
Labour councillor John Hewitt added: "The team have been playing in the Women's Super League since 2018 and have established themselves as a solid side in the league.
"But to build upon this it's vital the team relocate to the city, so the infrastructure is in place for them to thrive.
"A purpose-built stadium for our team will allow attendances to improve, encourage participation and will enable the team to follow in the footsteps of the men's side.
"Imagine having two European tours to go on in the same season!"
Pans for the new ground have yet to be confirmed but the move is seen as crucial to maintaining the growth of the women's side.
Councillor Kerry Pickett, a lifelong Seagulls fan, said: "I want to see Brighton's women's team play to a packed stadium in their hometown.
"The recent game against Spurs at the Amex drew a [record] crowd of just under 7,000 fans — including a large number of young girls keen to cheer on their heroes."
Brighton sit ninth in the WSL after one win from their first four games of the campaign.
