Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has hailed summer signing James Maddison and believes his arrival came at the perfect time for the club.

The midfielder started his career with the Lilywhites in fine form, scoring two goals and grabbing two assists in four Premier League games.

Postecoglou, 58, quickly labelled the England international a leader and did not hesitate to hand him a vice-captaincy role in N17.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: "We saw James pretty early on in the piece — there was competition from other clubs for him and the club backed me early on to bring him in.

"I think what you've seen so far is we're going to play with outstanding ability, but James is also somebody who is very, very driven to bring success to this football club.

"For James and the club I think it's perfect timing, because he's coming here to make an impact and not just for himself individually.

"But for Maddison and all the players, we're just at the beginning.

"I don't say that to dismiss the fact that we've had an encouraging start but we've still got a long way to go and what we're trying to build.

"Guys like Madders and Sonny and Romero, who are the new leaders of this group, are going to be playing an important role in that."

Postecoglou has so far brought an easy-on-the-eye brand of football back to Tottenham which has seen them pick up three wins and a draw so far in the 2023-24 campaign.

And the Greek-Australian firmly believes that when the team are playing the way he wants then the wins will take care of themselves.

He added: "The challenge is for me the same everywhere, to get the team playing a certain kind of football that gives fans something excited about on a weekly basis and bring success to the club.

"Success for me is winning things, but it's not a desperation, because that's not sustainable.

"When we get to where we want to by playing how we want to, the winning should take care of itself."
