Josh Warrington is already eyeing an "away day" rematch with Leigh Wood after suffering a stunning stoppage defeat on Saturday night.

The popular Leeds fighter, 32, was dominating the all-British WBA featherweight title bout until the dying seconds of round seven when Nottingham ace Wood burst into life.

A shuddering left hook was followed by a flurry of brutal shots which floored the Yorkshireman, with referee Michael Alexander waving the bout off soon after.

Warrington, who suggested the stoppage came too early after the fight, paid tribute to the fans in attendance at Sheffield's Utilita Arena and expressed his desire to run things back in Nottingham-born Wood's backyard.

He said: "Once again, massive credit to all of you who all follow and support me, you did me more than proud.

"[You] brought the noise, obviously screaming and shouting for the majority of the fight because we were dominating the fight.

"Fair play to those who came for Leigh as well, towards the end you got behind him and you certainly made the noise as I walked to the ring.

"I had a fair few boos and stuff but it's all part of it but especially to mine thank you so much, I'm forever indebted. Best in the world, best in the world.

"And who knows, we may get a little away day to the City Ground, take over that and get our revenge. Catch you all soon. Thank you."

Immediately after the defeat, Warrington said: "I know the referee is there for my own safety but I'm deep into my career. I've never really been hurt and this is my seventh world title fight.

"I should have been given the opportunity to carry on. Maybe I got up too quickly but my senses were with me."

Speaking after the sensational scrap, Wood insisted his belief never wavered despite losing several rounds to his spirited opponent.

He explained: "I had to give rounds away. He's a great champion and he doesn't quit. I had to dig in and dig deep and I did, but I knew my power would get to him.

"It's about staying calm and composed. I got the job done."

The triumph took Wood's career record to 28 wins from 31 fights (one draw), while Warrington's third defeat in five outings leaves him on 31 wins, three losses and a draw.
