2025/2026 Season So Far Arsenal have emerged as the standout performers in the 2025/26 Premier League season so far, opening up a clear lead at the top thanks to consistent results and one of the league’s strongest defensive records. Manchester City remain their closest challengers, while Manchester United and Aston Villa have also stayed in the hunt for Champions League places. A major surprise has been Villa’s sustained push near the summit after an inconsistent start, highlighting tactical evolution under their manager. Meanwhile, traditional heavyweights such as Liverpool and Chelsea have struggled for consistency at times, leaving the top-four race tightly contested. At the other end, the relegation battle has intensified, with several clubs - including Tottenham, West Ham and promoted sides - dragged into a tense survival fight as the season enters its decisive phase.

When Does the Premier League Season Start and End?

The 2025/26 Premier League season starts on August 16 and ends on May 24. Over these nine months, clubs balance league matches with cup competitions and international call-ups, so the calendar includes scheduled pauses.

Premier League Transfer Window Details

This summer period is when clubs reshape squads, add depth and address tactical needs before the season starts. This summer, the transfer window ran from June until September and reopened in the winter from the start of January to early February - a great opportunity for clubs to address squad injury woes.

Promotion and Relegation System

Each Premier League season consists of 38 games. At the end of the schedule, the bottom three teams are relegated to the EFL Championship. The top two teams from the Championship earn automatic promotion, while the third promotion spot is decided through a playoff involving the teams finishing third to sixth. In short, the top two are promoted automatically, and the next four compete for a place in the Premier League via a playoff.

Participation in European and Domestic Cups

The fight near the top of the table is about more than the title. The top four positions guarantee UEFA Champions League qualification, so competition for those places is especially intense. Premier League clubs also participate in:

  • The FA Cup
  • The League Cup (EFL Cup)
  • The UEFA Champions League

European qualification remains one of the biggest targets for leading clubs, alongside domestic silverware and strong league finishes.
