Sungjae Im will be eager to end his long wait for another PGA Tour title

After watching world number one Scottie Scheffler secure Olympic glory in Paris on Sunday, it is a massive week on the PGA Tour as players enter the last-chance saloon if they are to book their place in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

The top 70 in the FedEx standings after this week’s Wyndham Championship will make it through to the lucrative playoffs and accurate types are favoured to come out on top at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina.

While plenty of the big names are taking a week off before the FedEx St Jude Championship, defending champion Lucas Glover lines up and South Korean Sungjai Im, who was seventh at the Open Championship at Royal Troon is set to go off favourite.

Im to end trophy drought

It is nearly three years since Sungjae Im last collected a PGA Tour title at the Shriners Children’s Open, but that wait could be about to end as the South Korean has been knocking on the door for weeks.

Im, who was fourth at the Scottish Open and seventh at the Open, sat out the Olympics and his most recent form figures in regulation tour events read an impressive 4-9-8-3-12.

He was second in this tournament when his fellow countryman won here two years ago and also has two other top-10 finishes at Sedgefield, so it is clearly a venue he enjoys and that elusive win could arrive on Sunday.

Horschel trending in the right direction

Billy Horschel came even closer than Im to winning the Claret Jug as he tied for second with Justin Rose behind Xander Schauffele at Royal Troon.

It is 20 years since the American claimed the FedEx Cup and the man who won April’s Corales Puntacana Championship looks to be coming into good form at just the right time.

He has claimed four top-six finishes in his last seven visits to Sedgefield and this accurate type, who was second to Jim Herman when he lost by a shot in 2020, should be full of beans and raring to put in another strong effort.

Thompson to be in the mix

Davis Thompson struggled at both the Scottish Open and The Open, but those links efforts are easy to ignore when his Stateside form is analysed.

He claimed a four-shot victory at the John Deere Classic in his last effort on American soil and that came a week after he was edged out by just a shot at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

His ninth-place finish at the US Open also suggests he has the potential to greatly improve on the 22nd position he posted at the Wyndham on his second appearance last year.
