Wigan Warriors saw their time at the top of the Super League table brought to an abrupt end last week but they will be eager to return to the top of the pile when they host Huddersfield Giants at The Brick Community Stadium on Thursday night.

The Warriors saw their impressive winning home record ended with a mighty bump, as Warrington Wolves made the trip back to Cheshire with the two points after a 40-4 win.

Eager to get back in the saddle at the first time of asking, the Warriors should be feeling confident this week as they face a Huddersfield side that have struggled greatly on their travels away from John Smith’s Stadium.

Team news

Starting with the Warriors, head coach Matt Peet has made two changes to his squad ahead of the clash with Huddersfield.

Jai Field and Sam Eseh Jr replace Jacob Douglas and Brad O’Neill, who has unfortunately suffered an ACL injury and is set to be out of action for the remainder of the 2024 campaign.

As for Thursday's visitors, Huddersfield welcome four players back into their 21-man squad with Sam Hewitt, Andre Savelio, Thomas Deakin and Seb Ikahihifo all returning to the fold for interim head coach Luke Robinson.

Wigan have been the dominant force in this fixture, winning 11 of their last 12 encounters with Huddersfield in all competitions.

Huddersfield have a sorry record away from their West Yorkshire home, with the Giants losing all of their last 10 away games in Super League, which contributed to the club parting ways with head coach Ian Watson.

The last time these sides met in Super League was back in May at John Smith’s Stadium, with Wigan running out 48-6 winners.

Despite only scoring four points against Warrington last time out, in a match that saw an 18-game winning streak at home brought to an end, Wigan are still averaging just over 26 points per game in Super League this season.

Prediction

Wigan will and should be hurting from their winning home run coming to an end in such emphatic fashion against Sam Burgess’s Warrington.

Expect a big response from Peet’s Wigan side this week, especially with the entertaining Australian Field set to return to his familiar position at full-back.

Huddersfield have a terrible record in this particular fixture against the Warriors and it might well be a long night for interim boss Robinson against his former club.
