West Ham continue to set new standards in a landmark season after a 2-0 victory over Tottenham gave them a record fifth home win in the Women’s Super League.

The Hammers, who had lost nine of their last 11 London derbies, registered their best home points haul with a draw against Manchester City last time out and they have now extended that to 17.

A break of more than two weeks did not affect their rhythm as they were superior to the visitors, who have now lost six in a row in all competitions.

That is their worst run since March 2023 when nine successive defeats led to the sacking of Rehanne Skinner, whose work with West Ham is paying dividends.

Spurs were slightly unfortunate to go behind in the 16th minute. Verena Hanshaw picked up Viviane Asseyi’s pass on the underlap but her drilled effort was more of a cross than a shot.

However, defender Josefine Rybrink stuck out a leg to deflect the ball past Lize Kop and that intervention was ruled an own goal, denying Hanshaw what would have been her first for the club.

There was initially some debate about the goalscorer for the second, which came in added time at the end of the game.

Asseyi’s inswinging free-kick from the left bamboozled Kop, who was distracted by Riko Uekiget’s attempt to nudge it in at the near post, and she could only watch as the ball flew past her and inside the far post.

Uekiget was adjudged not to have got a touch but that was no consolation for the Tottenham goalkeeper.

In between those goals West Ham created the better chances, with Shekiera Martinez, Asseyi and Oona Siren all having opportunities, although Spurs did hit the frame of the goal twice.

In first-half added time Eveliina Summanen curled a free-kick around the wall and against the crossbar.

Midway through the second half Martha Thomas, on her 100th WSL appearance, hit the post having stretched behind her to stab Ella Morris’ low cross goalwards.
