Two goals in three minutes secured a 2-0 home win for Salford over Cheltenham, taking the Ammies into the FA Cup third round for the first time.

Frankie Okoronkwo opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Cole Stockton converted from the penalty spot two minutes later.

Cheltenham missed a penalty of their own as they failed to find a breakthrough despite heavy pressure in the second half.

Okoronkwo had the first clear chance of the afternoon after three minutes, but Sam Stubbs blocked.

Stubbs headed a free-kick from Luke Young at the other end five minutes later.

Salford took the lead after cutting Cheltenham open and Kelly N’Mai’s effort was blocked, but Okoronkwo dispatched the rebound.

Tyrese Fornah was gifted a chance to make it 2-0 by Scot Bennett’s mistake, but Joe Day saved.

Day was beaten again however in the 22nd minute when Jordan Thomas tripped N’Mai in the box and Stockton made no mistake from the spot.

Matthew Young kept out Tom Bradbury’s header as Cheltenham tried to hit back.

They improved after the break, but after Liam Dulson was fouled in the box, Matt Taylor’s penalty was parried to safety by Young, diving to his right in the 70th minute and N’Mai saw an effort hit the inside of the post in the final seconds.
