Newcastle's winless Premier League run was stretched to six games as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth at St James' Park.

The deadlock was finally broken against the run of play in the 62nd minute as Philip Billing burst into the box to lash Jordan Zemura's left-wing cross in on the volley.

However, Alexander Isak netted his first home goal for Newcastle to haul them level from the spot just five minutes later after a penalty was awarded for handball.

The Magpies took 20 shots to their opponents' 10 and enjoyed 72% of the ball but were unable to convert their dominance into victory.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe expressed his desperation for his side to pick up three points again.

He said: "It was a tough game. I don't think we played particularly well, we were off our best level and one for us to reflect on.

"I am desperate to win, it feels like a long time for us. We need to win and compete and be the best versions of us."

Bournemouth caretaker manager Gary O'Neil revealed he would find out his future soon after a battling point on Tyneside.

He said: "It is a good point for us, it is a tough place to come. The boys stood up. I am a little bit disappointed with the penalty but we would have taken a point before. I am pleased the boys got something out of it because they put in a hell of a shift.

"They [the players] will show spirit every game. It is such a tough league so we will reset. This game means nothing as of tomorrow. This game won't help you in the next one.

"I am just delighted for the lads, everyone, the fans because it is a hell of a long way to come. We appreciate their support — the boys need them in those tough moments where they have to dig in.

"I will be finding out what's happening club-wise next week and see what the plan is. If it is me we'll get back to work on the grass with the lads.

"I have no idea what's happening — I knew I was taking today and I don't know about further, I guess I'll find out tomorrow."

Did you know?

Newcastle have failed to win any of their last six Premier League matches, drawing five (one loss). They are the first Premier League team to draw five of their opening seven matches in a season since Sunderland in 2014-15.

Bournemouth have avoided defeat in their last three Premier League matches (one win, two draws). It is the first time they have managed that since November 2019 under Howe.

Newcastle have hit the woodwork five times in the Premier League this season — the only team that has done so more so far is Liverpool (six).

Isak became the 27th different player to score a Premier League penalty for Newcastle, more than any other side in the history of the competition.

Billing has scored two goals in his last two top-flight games, as many as he managed in his previous 49 such matches.
