More French success for O'Brien

Mother Earth secured trainer Aidan O'Brien a remarkable fifth Group One success of the year on French Soil following her victory in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville on Tuesday.

The three-year-old filly, who won the Qipco 1,000 Guineas back in May, hit the front as she approached the final furlong and was able to hold on for victory despite late challenges from Sagamiyra, Speak Of The Devil and Rougir.

O'Brien can add the victory to his previous successes in France this year in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club with St Mark's Basilica, the Prix de Diane with Joan Of Arc and Broome's success in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

It was also O'Brien's second victory in the Prix Rothschild, following on from his success with Roly Poly in 2017.

Addeybb on course for Champion Stakes defence

Trainer William Haggas has indicated Addeybb is very much on course to defend his Qipco Champion Stakes crown at Ascot in October.

The son of Pivotal claimed his first domestic Group One success in last year's renewal of the race and he followed that up by successfully defending his Queen Elizabeth Stakes title in Australia at the start of 2021.

Addeybb made his seasonal reappearance on British soil in last month's Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, finishing only behind the impressive St Mark's Basilica, and Haggas has now seemingly turned his attention to the Champion Stakes.

The Newmarket handler said: "It was great to win the Champion Stakes last year, fantastic.

"Addeybb was really on his game that day, too. If we can get him like that again that would be great."

Logician retired to stud

The John Gosden-trained Logician, who won the 2019 renewal of the St Leger at Doncaster, has been retired to stud.

Logician capped a brilliant three-year-old campaign when winning the Classic almost two years ago.

But a debilitating bout of peritonitis the following winter meant he was only able to make a further four starts.

The decision has now been made to retire the son of Frankel to the Shade Oak Stud in Shropshire where he will be looked after by Peter Hockenhull and his wife Emma.

Peter Hockenhull said: "The purchase of Logician is the culmination of a four-year search to bring another top-class stallion prospect to Shade Oak, one with all the qualities needed in a champion National Hunt sire. Logician ticks every box."

Bedford Flyer set for Nunthorpe challenge

Bedford Flyer is set to step up to Group One company by running in this month's Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

The Les Eyre-trained three-year-old already has one victory to his name on the Knavesmire this year, triumphing in a Group Three Handicap back in May, while he also caught the eye during last month's King George meeting at Ascot.

The Nunthorpe will represent a significant step up for the Rp Racing Ltd-owned colt.

But Eyre knows all about causing surprises at York, having trained 33-1 outsider Far Ahead to success in the Ebor Handicap back in 1997.

He said: "The Nunthorpe is on the agenda. It might be being a bit ambitious — but he has never let us down yet.

"We've won the Ebor in the past. So it would be nice if we could do it with the sprinters."
