Aaron Morley scored an injury-time penalty in what was potentially his last game for the club as Wycombe left it late to beat Exeter 2-1 at Adams Park and move top of the League One table.

The hosts began the better of the two sides as Beryly Lubala fired wide, whilst Caleb Taylor saw his half-chance get saved by Joe Whitworth in the opening six minutes, but the opening 45 did not see any keeper make a notable save.

For the Chairboys, Camron Humphreys twice tried his luck but missed the target on both occasions.

Richard Kone, who came into the team following his brief cameo and stunning goal in the 2-1 loss at Charlton on Sunday, saw his header get easily saved by Whitworth in the Exeter goal.

For the Grecians, who had not lost to Wanderers in their last eight league games, had their best chances come from Caleb Watts and Vincent Harper.

The second period was completely different to the first as both teams looked for the opening.

Ilmari Kiskanen’s header just went over the bar before Watts’ cheeky lob from 40 yards nearly caught Franco Ravizzoli out, but thankfully, he clawed the ball into his hands on 55 minutes.

But the Chairboys went ahead 10 minutes later, when Leahy’s deflected free-kick flew past Whitworth to give Wanderers the lead.

It was his sixth of the season, and the second consecutive New Year’s Day he has scored in for Wycombe.

However, City levelled things up with five minutes to go as Tristan Carma headed home an Ed Francis corner.

Incredibly, the drama was not over as in injury-time referee Scott Simpson deemed that there was a handball in the Exeter box, and up-stepped Morley with the winner.
