Salford have appointed Karl Robinson as their new head coach.

Robinson, the former Charlton, MK Dons and Oxford manager, takes over with Salford 21st in League Two and five points above the relegation zone.

Salford chief executive Nicky Butt told the club website: "We are delighted to welcome Karl to Salford as our new head coach.

"Throughout the interview and appointment process he impressed us with his wealth of knowledge and ability.

"Salford's ambition is to play as high up in the Football League as possible so when we entered the recruitment process we felt it was important for us to appoint someone with experience of managing at a higher level, and Karl's long-term vision for the club, drive and determination excited us."

Robinson succeeds Neil Wood, who was sacked last month after a run of eight league games without a win.

The Ammies are now on their sixth manager since gaining promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history in 2019.

Salford gain an unusually high level of media attention for its size due to being owned by six former Manchester United stars in Butt, Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham — as well as Singaporean businessman Peter Lim.

With promotion repeatedly outlined as the primary aim of the star-studded ownership group, the pressure will be firmly on Robinson to hit the ground running in Greater Manchester.

The 43-year-old's first game in charge will be at home to bottom-placed Forest Green on Saturday.
