- Recommended bet: Rohit Sharma India Top Batter at 11/4

The most eagerly-anticipated fixture of the Cricket World Cup league stage takes place on Saturday as tournament hosts India face Pakistan at the colossal Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Both teams have won their first two games, with India completing successful run-chases against Australia and Afghanistan.

Pakistan chased down a World Cup record target of 345 in Tuesday's six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, but playing rivals India in front of 130,000 fans in Ahmedabad will be a massive challenge for Babar Azam's team.

Team news

India opener Shubman Gill has returned to training and may replace Ishan Kishan at the top of the order.

Pakistan's Abdullah Shafique will again open the batting, having scored an excellent century against Sri Lanka after replacing the out-of-form Fakhar Zaman.

The stats

India have won eight of their last 10 ODIs against Pakistan.

Skipper Rohit Sharma has scored two centuries and two half-centuries in his last five ODIs against Pakistan.

India have won 20 of their 26 home ODIs since the start of 2020.

Pakistan beat the Netherlands and Sri Lanka despite hitting fewer sixes than their opponents in both games.

Mohammad Rizwan averages 75 in his 18 ODI appearances for Pakistan this year.

Pakistan's win over Sri Lanka on Tuesday featured four individual centuries – a new World Cup record.

Prediction

The atmosphere for India's clash with Pakistan is likely to be electric and India's vastly experienced captain Rohit Sharma could play a starring role for the World Cup favourites.

Rohit has a terrific record against Pakistan, scoring 56, 11, 140, 111 not out and 52 in his last five ODI innings against them, and he bounced back from a duck against Australia with a cracking century in Wednesday's win against Afghanistan.

The right-hander, who has three ODI double-centuries on his CV, smashed 131 from just 84 balls against the Afghans and Pakistan's new-ball bowlers have not performed to their usual high standards in their first couple of matches.

Babar's men have not looked entirely convincing in their wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka and they suffered a 228-run defeat against India in the Asia Cup last month.

Opener Rohit struck four sixes in a breezy half-century in that match and he could get stuck into the Pakistan bowlers on the biggest stage this weekend.
