Trinity Rodman could be key to the USA's chances of claiming a third consecutive Women's World Cup crown.

The 21-year-old forward is the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman and has starred for National Women's Soccer League side Washington Spirit since 2021.

She also boasts 18 international caps and recently bagged both goals in a 2-0 victory against Wales — her nation's final friendly game before the tournament.

As the reigning champions look to defend their title in Australia and New Zealand, we take a closer look at Rodman and what she brings to the USWNT.

High expectations

Rodman has been bullish about the USA's chances of winning a record-breaking third World Cup in a row, insisting that the team are determined to make history.

Speaking last week, she said: "My expectations are that we're the most ruthless team, we're never going to give up and we're going to get the title.

"Obviously, the team has changed so much over the last couple of World Cups, even the past couple of months, but this team is something special.

"We want it more than ever, so I expect a gold medal."

Dropping deep

Rodman's four goals from 13 NWSL appearances in 2023 are solid, if unspectacular — but her underlying numbers depict a centre forward with a rare focus on creation.

Her expected assists tally of 3.2 suggests she has been unlucky not to record more than her actual total of two.

Additionally, her 529 touches and progressive passing distance of 820 yards are both high for a striker, indicating that she frequently drops deep to get involved with build-up play.

Trinity tracks back

Perhaps Rodman's standout talent as a forward is her work out of possession.

She has made 61 ball recoveries, 21 blocks and nine interceptions for Washington Spirit in the NWSL this term, as well as winning 11 of her 17 attempted tackles.

The young attacker consistently demonstrates a willingness to graft and track back for her team, which will surely serve the USA well at the World Cup.

Road-runner Rodman

One of Rodman's most eye-catching skills is her ability to run with the ball.

Washington Spirit's No2 has completed 43 of her 86 attempted take-ons in the NWSL this season — but it is where she takes the ball that is most impressive.

Of her 309 carries, 24 ended in the final third and 36 saw her break into the penalty area. That directness could prove vital in the USA's quest for glory.

Rodman legacy

Rodman has revealed a desire to forge her own legacy and prove that she is not only successful because of her surname.

She said: "I think being a woman coming from the NBA legacy of Dennis Rodman, I didn't want the comments of, 'she's only here because there's potential in the last name'.

"That has always been important to me and will continue to be, but at the end of the day, I want the name to be Trinity Rodman and she earned it herself, not because she has that last name but because she earned her way."
