Emile Smith Rowe has been turning on the style for England Under-21s as they look to go all the way in this summer's European Championship.

The Young Lions have won their opening two fixtures against Czech Republic and Israel, with Smith Rowe scoring in both matches.

His return to form will please Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who was unable to rely on the creative midfielder for much of last season.

As England look to triumph in Georgia and Romania, we take a look at how the 22-year-old can play his way back into contention in North London.

Arsenal outcast

Smith Rowe has suffered a fall from grace in recent times.

The 2021-22 campaign was one to remember for Arsenal's No10, who tallied 12 goal contributions in the Premier League.

But an injury-ridden 2022-23 season meant that the Gunners' academy graduate made only 12 top-flight appearances, all of them coming from the bench.

Smith Rowe required groin surgery last September and was never able to recapture the sparkling form that had earned him three England caps.

But with the attacking midfielder exhibiting his talent in Georgia in recent days, there is some hope that he can resurrect his career at the Emirates.

Hope on the horizon

Despite being part of a squad that finished second to Manchester City, Smith Rowe still describes last season as a struggle.

He said: "Definitely a tough season for myself with injuries and not quite getting back into the team.

"I think my main target right now is to get back into the Arsenal team. Obviously first we [England] want to win this tournament.

"Hopefully I can have a long future and get more England caps but I've got to think of the present and making sure I'm fit for every game and getting as many minutes as I can."

Numbers game

Smith Rowe still has the perfect profile for an Arteta team — his high energy and creative flair make him a dangerous option across the midfield.

So while the playmaker may rue his disrupted season, there is still plenty to be positive about.

In his limited minutes on the pitch, Smith Rowe boasted a 91% pass completion rate in the top flight, including 30 of his 34 passes in the final third.

Clearly retaining his eye for goal as shown by his form for Lee Carsley's Young Lions, a deep run in the summer showpiece should ensure Arteta keeps him in the fold for Arsenal's trophy hunt next term.

Gunning for glory

The potential arrival of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz to Arteta's squad and the continued excellence of Martin Odegaard would provide stiff competition for Smith Rowe.

And the reality of the situation in North London will mean that the dynamic midfielder may seek a move away from the Emirates if he is not given ample opportunity.

Contracted until 2026 however, it is most likely he will fight for his place in the Gunners' bright future.
