Gary O'Neil declared himself "really pleased" with Wolves' efforts after they salvaged a 1-1 draw at Brentford despite losing Joao Gomes to a red card after just nine minutes.

Tommy Doyle's second-half equaliser means O'Neil's men will have the chance to clinch the tie in a replay at Molineux after Neal Maupay had given the hosts the lead.

And the 40-year-old boss was full of praise for his side's rearguard.

He said: "I'm really pleased, it's an incredible effort from the players.

"There was not much between the teams even with 10 vs 11.

"We coped with their extra man, tactically we dealt with it very well. Even going 1-0 down with 10 men, to put in the second half they did was really impressive."

The Wolves boss did not dispute Gomes' early dismissal — but did believe Bees pair Mikkel Damsgaard and Keane Lewis-Potter should have been sent off in separate incidents.

He said: "I can see it [Gomes' red card]. I know Joao, he would never do this on purpose, but it doesn't look great.

"The tackle on Tommy Doyle [by Mikkel Damsgaard] is a straight leg with studs, just as bad as Joao.

"Then Keane Lewis-Potter grabbing Nelson Semedo by the throat is a red.

"We were saying in the bench, it will be a red, VAR will give a red, so I was really surprised but it's not really my problem, I will deal with my group."

Brentford manager Thomas Frank disagreed with O'Neil's verdict on the Damsgaard incident.

He said: "I don't think it [Damsgaard's tackle] is a red.

"There are several incidents where you pause the footage and it looks like a red. If you give these, it is not a contact sport, which is a problem."

But the Dane was not pleased with his side's performance overall.

He said: "There was a lack of quality.

"If you play 11 against 10 after 80 minutes and don't win, that's a lack of quality.

"We were not moving the ball, not creating chances, then we got punished."
