- Managerless Southampton have lost 13 of their opening 16 league games
- Both teams have scored in nine of Fulham’s last ten league matches.

Fulham to win & both teams to score

Southampton’s 5-0 hiding at home Tottenham last Sunday called time on the services of Russell Martin and they head to Fulham managerless, bidding to snap a six-game winless run.

The sorry Saints are rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, having collected only five points from 16 outings, and seven of their opening eight away games have ended in defeat.

That will be music to the ears of Fulham, who are flying high in eighth having played out score draws in their last two league matches with title-chasing pair Arsenal and Liverpool.

The Cottagers have lost only one of their last eight league matches and will firmly believe they have what it takes to challenge for the European qualification places.

Meanwhile, it already looks like a case of building for next season’s Championship campaign for Southampton as they are already nine points adrift of safety.

Team news

Fulham must do without injured trio Joachim Andersen, Harrison Reed and Reiss Nelson, but Calvin Bassey and Tom Cairney both return from suspension.

Interim Southampton boss Simon Rusk is without goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and Gavin Bazunu as well as Juan Larios, Ross Stewart, Will Smallbone and Adam Lallana. Defender Jack Stephens remains suspended.

The stats

Fulham completed a Premier League double over Southampton the last time the sides met in the 2022/23 campaign.

Southampton have won just one of their nine Premier League away games against Fulham, drawing three times and suffering five defeats.

The Saints have lost eight of their last 10 Premier League away matches against London sides.

Southampton have lost 13 of their 16 league games this season, including seven of their eight away trips.

Both teams have scored in nine of Fulham’s last 10 league matches.

The Cottagers have lost only one of their last eight league matches, although they have played out four draws in that period.

Prediction

Seeing a manager leave their post can often spark a response in a side but it is hard to imagine that will be the case with Southampton, who look woefully out of their depth in the Premier League.

The Saints have picked up only five points in 16 outings and they have shipped 36 goals, a defensive frailty that may be exposed by in-form hosts Fulham.

The Cottagers have pinched points off Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool during their last four league outings and should find this challenge much easier.

Marco Silva’s side have recorded home league wins over Leicester, Newcastle, Brentford and Brighton this season and can add Southampton to their hit list.

That said, Fulham have managed only two clean sheets in 16 top-flight fixtures so Southampton, who were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool in their EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday, may be able to notch a consolation strike.
