- France have won nine of their last 14 meetings with England
- Les Bleues won 2-1 at St James' Park on Friday

France to win

France are in full control of their Euro 2025 qualifying section and the League A Group 3 leaders could make life even harder for England with a win in Saint-Etienne on Tuesday.

Les Bleues are five points clear of second-placed Sweden and England, who are third on goal difference, and they could edge closer to sealing a top-two spot with a damaging victory over the Lionesses.

The top two in the group progress to next summer's finals, while third may be good enough to seal a play-off place, but either way, the holders have it all to do if they are to defend their crown in Switzerland next summer.

Team news

Mary Earps has withdrawn from the squad with the hip injury picked up in Friday's defeat at St James' Park. Hannah Hampton replaced Earps in goal and is likely to continue, while Birmingham City's Lucy Thomas has been called into the squad for Tuesday's trip to France.

France head coach Herve Renard has no injury concerns following the win in Newcastle and could stick with the same starting XI.

The stats

France have won nine of their previous 14 meetings with England.

Les Bleues have won all three matches in qualifying.

France have conceded just one goal in their three qualifying matches so far.

England are in a perilous position after three rounds of Euro 2025 qualifying and the current holders could see their trophy slip further from their grasp in France on Tuesday.

The Lionesses are third in their qualifying section, five points behind the leaders who beat them 2-1 in Newcastle on Friday. And Les Bleues could pull further clear with another victory in Saint-Etienne in this rapid rematch.

France have dominated this fixture but England looked to be in decent shape following Beth Mead's opener at St James' Park, and a period of sustained pressure and position from the home side.

However, a fervent home crowd were silenced as France levelled matters just before half-time before adding the winning touch midway through the second half.

Mistakes cost the Lionesses, who became sloppy in possession and who conceded both goals from poorly defended set-pieces.

Sarina Wiegman will demand a reaction from the current European champions but they had little in the way of a response after falling behind on Tyneside.

Fatigue looked an issue in the England legs, but they were not helped by the injury to influential goalkeeper Mary Earps, either, and she has withdrawn from the squad following the hip injury she picked up in that match.

Hannah Hampton is likely to continue to deputise in the Lionesses net, but it is a huge blow to their chances, and France will scent blood on home soil.

Les Bleues have won nine of the last 14 meetings and they can extend that sequence with a crucial hammer blow in Saint-Etienne on Tuesday to leave England almost out of reach of top spot in the group with two games to go.
