Eddie is ready

Eddie Nketiah is confident he can make the step up to senior international football following his first England call-up.

The Arsenal striker is the Three Lions Under-21s' leading scorer with 16 goals in 17 appearances and will be hoping to impress Gareth Southgate in training ahead of games against Ukraine and Scotland.

Nketiah, 24, said: "I am pretty confident, obviously I’ve been playing for a great club at Arsenal.

"These tough games will be a new experience but one that I will relish.

"It's about showing my quality this week and hopefully getting an opportunity to go out there and help the team.”

Ferguson withdraws

Evan Ferguson has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and the Netherlands due to injury.

The in-form Brighton striker injured his knee during the Seagulls' 3-1 win over Newcastle last Saturday — a game which saw the 18-year-old score a hat-trick.

An Irish FA statement said: "Ferguson reported for international duty on Sunday but after assessment from the Ireland medical team, Ferguson has been ruled out of both fixtures."

Ferguson will be unable to help his team in their must-win clash at the Parc des Princes on Thursday with their Euro 2024 qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Stephen Kenny's men have just three points in their group so far, level with Sunday's opponents the Netherlands, who have played a game more.

Quique'd out

Villarreal have sacked manager Quique Setien just four games into the season.

Setien, who previously managed Barcelona, was appointed to replace Unai Emery following his departure from Aston Villa last October.

The 64-year-old managed to guide the Yellow Submarine to fifth place in LaLiga but they have lost three of their first four games this term.

A statement said: "The club highlights his great professionalism and commitment and appreciates both him and his coaching staff for having taken charge in a complicated situation last season.

"Under the coach from Cantabria, the team had a great season, promoting many youngsters from the youth academy and qualifying for the Europa League after reaching fifth place in LaLiga.

"Villarreal CF would like to thank Setien for his work and involvement and wishes him the best of luck in his career."

Agent David

Manchester United loan signing Sergio Reguilon has revealed that former Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea helped convince him to join the club.

The Spanish left-back, 26, sealed a temporary move from Tottenham on deadline day after injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

And the former Real Madrid product says recently-departed No1 De Gea talked up the potential switch to Old Trafford.

Reguilon told the club's official site: "I spoke a lot with David and he told me about the club. He told me you are coming to the best club in England.

"All these players [like De Gea] are legends over in Spain, because I follow a lot of the Premier League.

"David will always be a legend here and he told me about the club, the people that are here, the training ground, the stadium, the fans, everything.

"He said they are amazing, unbelievable. He only has amazing words for Manchester United."

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has completed a permanent move to Besiktas.

The Ivory Coast centre-back, 29, never featured under Erik ten Hag after spending last season on loan at Marseille.

He made 113 appearances for the Red Devils after being signed by Jose Mourinho in 2016, winning the Europa League and Carabao Cup in his first season.

Bailly's last competitive appearance for United came in a 3-1 win over Burnley in December 2021.

The defender is the second player to head to the Turkish side from Old Trafford this summer after midfielder Fred.

Podence heads to Greece

Portuguese forward Daniel Podence has signed a new contract at Wolves before re-joining Olympiacos on loan.

Podence, 27, arrived at Molineux from the Greek side in January 2020 and has since made 105 appearances for the West Midlands outfit.

He has yet to feature under Gary O'Neil and his new contract runs until 2025 with the option to extend for a further year.

Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs said: "It's no secret that Daniel was keen to look at new options.

"This is an opportunity for him to go back where he was and play European football, and he was great in understanding that for us to allow it, he had to sign a contract."
