Jota backs Mac

Diogo Jota is relishing linking up with new Liverpool team-mate Alexis Mac Allister.

Ex-Brighton midfielder Mac Allister made his Reds bow yesterday, playing the second half of his new club's opening 4-2 pre-season win over German side Karlsruher.

The contest appeared to be heading for a 2-2 draw before an injury-time brace from Jota, with Mac Allister laying on the assist for one of his strikes.

On the World Cup winner's arrival, Jota said: "I really like these kind of players, I have to tell you!

"They can see the passes and it's almost like you just need to make the run and they will see it, that's amazing.

"I started to see that I can link up very well with him [Mac Allister] and hopefully we can take that into the season."

Jurgen Klopp's men face another German second division outfit in Greuther Furth on Monday, before heading to Singapore for clashes with Leicester and Bayern Munich.

Doherty returns

Matt Doherty has rejoined former club Wolves on a free transfer.

The Republic of Ireland international defender, 31, ended a decade at Molineux when moving to Tottenham in 2020 and played 71 times for the North Londoners.

He then signed a short-term deal with LaLiga outfit Atletico Madrid in January but made just two cameo appearances from the bench under Diego Simeone.

Doherty now returns to the club he has made 302 appearances for and cannot wait to pull on the gold shirt once again.

He told the club's website: "I've experienced some really good trips away in Europe and it was three years that I had a great time also, but I've managed to find my way back home."

New Zealand captain Ali Riley dedicated her side's shock Women's World Cup win over Norway to the victims of a deadly shooting in Auckland.

The incident cast a shadow over the opening game of the tournament but the co-hosts delivered a fitting tribute, stunning their well-fancied opponents 1-0 thanks to Hannah Wilkinson's second-half strike.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Kiwis skipper Riley said: "This morning something really, really tragic happened and we wanted to bring something positive tonight.

"We thought of the victims and the first responders and they made us so proud and we just wanted to help bring something amazing today.

"I am so so proud we have been fighting for this for so long. We had a clear goal to inspire young girls, young people around this country and the world.

"I really think we did that tonight. Anything is possible."

Cherries grab Kerkez

Bournemouth have completed the signing of highly-rated Hungary international left-back Milos Kerkez.

The 19-year-old joins the Cherries from AZ Alkmaar for an undisclosed fee despite reportedly being courted by several Champions League clubs.

He becomes their third signing of the summer after Justin Kluivert and Romain Faivre's arrivals from Roma and Lyon respectively.

Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake said: "We are delighted to announce the signing of Milos, a talented young player with a great deal of potential.

"He was being tracked by a number of clubs in Europe but was very keen to join us after hearing about our plans and ambitions for the future.
