- Leeds are two points clear of Sheffield United at the top
- Burnley and Sunderland also in promotion hunt
- Plymouth are bottom, four points from safety

All 24 teams in the Championship play on New Year's Day with leaders Leeds United's home game with fifth-placed Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland vs Sheffield United among the highlights.

Plymouth vs Bristol City (Wednesday, 12.30pm)

Wayne Rooney's spell as Plymouth head coach came to an end on Monday with Argyle bottom of the table and on a nine-game winless run.

First-team coach Kevin Nancekivell is set to be in charge for the visit of Bristol City but it looks unlikely Rooney's exit will signal a return to winning ways as the hosts prepare to face a Robins outfit that has won their last two matches.

Score prediction: Plymouth 0-1 Bristol City

QPR vs Watford (Wednesday, 12.30pm)

QPR have won their last three at home and can extend that sequence with victory over Watford, who were disappointing when losing 2-1 at home to Cardiff on Sunday.

Score prediction: QPR 2-0 Watford

Millwall vs Oxford (Wednesday, 1pm)

Alex Neil's first game in charge of Millwall is a tricky test at home to Oxford, who have won their last two games to ease their relegation fears.

Millwall picked up a solid point in a goalless draw at Coventry on Sunday and they may have to settle for another draw on Wednesday.

Score prediction: Millwall 1-1 Oxford

Burnley vs Stoke City (Wednesday, 3pm)

Burnley are third, just three points behind leaders Leeds, and they can extend their unbeaten run in the Championship to 12 games with a home win over Stoke, who will have caretaker boss Ryan Shawcross in charge following Narcis Pelach's recent departure.

Score prediction: Burnley 3-1 Stoke City

Cardiff vs Coventry (Wednesday, 3pm)

Coventry are showing some good signs under Frank Lampard and they can pick up all three points against Cardiff, who are still in the relegation zone despite beating Watford on Sunday.

Score prediction: Cardiff 1-2 Coventry

Leeds vs Blackburn (Wednesday, 3pm)

Leeds are motoring in the promotion race after three straight wins and they can make it four on the spin by seeing off Blackburn at Elland Road.

Score prediction: Leeds 2-0 Blackburn

Luton vs Norwich (Wednesday, 3pm)

Norwich earned a late point on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with QPR and another draw could be on the cards when they go to Luton, who are down in 19th but are unbeaten in their last six home matches.

Score prediction: Luton 1-1 Norwich

Portsmouth vs Swansea (Wednesday, 3pm)

Portsmouth have lost their last two games and only won one of their last five so they could struggle against Swansea, who are ninth after two successive wins.

Score prediction: Portsmouth 0-1 Swansea

Sheffield Wednesday vs Derby (Wednesday, 3pm)

Sheffield Wednesday were disappointingly beaten 3-1 by Preston on Sunday and they could be set for more frustration at home to Derby, who look to be good enough to earn a point after beating West Brom before narrowly losing to Leeds at the weekend.

Score prediction: Sheffield Wednesday 2-2 Derby

West Brom vs Preston (Wednesday, 3pm)

West Brom are unbeaten in their last seven home games and they can boost their hopes of finishing in the top six by beating Preston, putting an end to their two-game winning run in the process.

Score prediction: West Brom 3-2 Preston

Hull vs Middlesbrough (Wednesday, 5.30pm)

Hull are just a point above the bottom three and are set to be in for a difficult evening at home to Middlesbrough, who are sixth and are bidding to end a run of three draws on the trot.

Score prediction: Hull 1-3 Middlesbrough

Sunderland vs Sheffield United (Wednesday, 8pm)

This could be a cracker to round off the Championship's New Year's Day games as fourth-placed Sunderland entertain Sheffield United, who are second.

The Black Cats slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat at Stoke last time but they can make amends by seeing off the Blades, who have lost to Burnley and drawn with West Brom in their last two outings.

Score prediction: Sunderland 3-2 Sheffield United
