Nine-man Everton missed the chance to seal Premier League safety after losing 3-2 to Brentford at Goodison Park.

The Toffees made the perfect start when Dominic Calvert-Lewin got a slight touch on Richarlison's flick after just 10 minues.

But the momentum switched eight minutes later when Jarrad Branthwaite was shown a straight red card for his last-ditch challenge on Ivan Toney.

The Bees drew level eight minutes from the end of the first half via a Seamus Coleman own goal.

Yet Frank Lampard's side went into the interval with the lead as Richarlison converted from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time.

The visitors dominated the second half and equalised once again when Yoane Wissa headed past Jordan Pickford in the 62nd minute.

Thomas Frank's men then took the lead just two minutes later through Rico Henry's powerful back-post header.

The hosts were reduced to nine men two minutes from time when substitute Salomon Rondon was dismissed for a reckless tackle on Henry.

The Merseysiders are just two points above the bottom three but manager Lampard is remaining positive.

He said: "The start was great, we could have scored three. The red card changes the game completely.

"The important thing is we have a positve attitude. It's in our hands at Goodison again hopefully with 11 on the pitch.

"The effort was incredible. The players deserve a little rest. The legs are hanging off a bit with all the injuries."

Brentford move within two points of the top half and manager Frank was pleased in his assessment.

He said: "We were patient and in the end we got the goals.

"We made a change, we made it clear how we wanted to attack with more crosses and the third goal comes from a cross.

"The whole season we have said we want to finish as high as possible. We will do our very best to win on Sunday."

Everton host Crystal Palace on Thursday before a final-day trip to Arsenal, while Brentford finish their maiden Premier League campaign with the visit of Leeds.
