Livingstone to be England's top run scorer

England's stunning victory on Friday means that the series is on the line when they take on Australia in the third and final T20 international at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The tourists' blistering opening partnership in the first T20I at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday had put Australia well on their way to a 28-run success and a similar outcome looked very much in the offing in the second on Friday, with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Josh Inglis capitalising on another fast start as they posted an improved score of 193-6.

However, the Aussies had perhaps not accounted for Liam Livingstone, who bludgeoned 87 off 47 balls including five sixes, as he led England to a three-wicket win to set up Sunday's encounter in Manchester as a winner-takes-all.

Team news

England rested Jofra Archer for the second T20 and brought in Brydon Carse, who impressed with figures of 2-26 off four overs and looks set to keep his place.

Archer is likely to be brought back into the team at Old Trafford, with Saqib Mahmood and Reece Topley the most in peril after posting a combined 0-77 off six overs. Left-arm paceman Josh Hull may also come into the reckoning if both are rotated.

All-rounder Dan Mousley is an option to strengthen England's batting line-up with Jamie Overton and Sam Curran having struggled to make an impact in the middle order.

Mitchell Marsh missed the second T20 through illness and may return although Jake Fraser-McGurk starred in the Australia captain's absence with his side's top score of 50.

It is their bowling attack that is most stretched with Xavier Bartlett ruled out with a side strain. Josh Hazlewood is set to return to the side after missing Friday's defeat and with Aaron Hardie and Cooper Connolly struggling to stand up to Livingstone's onslaught, Riley Meredith may also get the nod.

The stats

Travis Head has given Australia a great start in both T20s so far with scores of 59 and 31 at a combined strike rate of 243

It is honours even between England and Australia in T20 internationals with 12 wins apiece in their 26 meetings in this format.

Liam Livingstone has top scored for England in both matches so far, making 37 at the Rose Bowl before his brilliant match-winning 87 in Cardiff to level the series. The Lancashire all-rounder has also impressed with the ball, taking 3-22 off three overs on Wednesday before claiming 2-16 off three overs on Friday.

Travis Head has been sensational at the top of the order for Australia, operating at a strike rate of 243 runs per 100 balls in his innings of 59 and 31 in the first two T20s.

England have bowled first in nine of their last 10 matches in the T20 format, winning six times in that run, while they have won three of their last four T20s at Old Trafford.

Prediction

Australia's batting line-up has struggled to fire as a unit outside of the top four and they may have been disappointed to have only posted scores of 179 and 193 in the series so far after brilliant starts in both.

Their bowling attack also looks stretched in this series but, with the expected return of Josh Hazlewood, the tourists look worthy favourites to win the decider, even if a touch vulnerable.

It may be argued that the value is with the hosts to win the match and, after the disappointment of the opening defeat, they have at least taken the series to a decider thanks to the brilliance of Livingstone, with Jacob Bethell playing a fabulous supporting role.

However, with Jamie Overton and Sam Curran higher up the order than would normally be the case and Will Jacks and Jordan Cox struggling for runs, it is hard to see England having enough in their armoury to take the series.

Given his two knocks so far, there is still plenty of value in Livingstone completing a hat-trick of top scores for England as he has almost single-handedly kept his side competitive in both run chases.

The Lancashire man made 37 off 27 balls last Wednesday, still nearly double that of his nearest challenger Phil Salt (20), while his 87 off 47 balls on Friday was easily clear of England's next best — Bethell (44).
