Ronan Coughlan’s early penalty was enough to give Fleetwood a 1-0 win at home to Bradford.

The Cod Army’s leading scorer rolled in from the spot in the eighth minute after Andy Cook’s clumsy challenge had sent Matty Virtue tumbling in the box.

The early lead was no more than the hosts – without a win in any competition in over a month – had deserved after their impressive start to the game.

Ryan Graydon nearly doubled their advantage shortly after but his low drive from distance was narrowly wide.

Bradford improved as the first half drew on but failed to really trouble David Harrington in the Town goal.

And their own keeper, Sam Walker, nearly handed Fleetwood a chance when his wayward throw was leapt upon by Virtue, whose audacious lob from distance went just wide.

Bradford were perhaps the side looking most likely to score in the second half but the final ball all too often went astray.

They were forced into hoping shots from distance by Clarke Oduor, Jamie Walker and Lewis Richards could salvage them a point.

But those efforts were wayward and their best chance came with 10 minutes remaining when Bobby Pointon finally got in behind the back line, but Harrington reacted well to save low down.

That signalled the end of Bradford’s hopes as Fleetwood saw out the game for a much-needed victory.
