Early goal sees leaders Wycombe to win over Wigan
Wycombe strengthened their position at the top of Sky Bet League One with a 1-0 victory at Wigan – but only after withstanding a second-half onslaught from the home side.
The Chairboys went ahead with their first attack, when Daniel Harvie’s right-wing corner was headed home by the unmarked Joe Low.
And the visitors almost doubled their lead when Dan Udoh latched on to a long ball and raced clear through, only to be denied by Sam Tickle in the Wigan goal.
Wigan were desperately unlucky not to equalise just before the break when Jonny Smith cut in off the right and curled in a trademark left-footed shot which beat Franco Ravizzoli only to come back off the bar.
The home side picked up where they had left off in the second half, with Silko Thomas’ cross being steered over the top from close range by substitute Dale Taylor.
Thomas then forced a good save from Ravizzoli, before Toby Sibbick’s cross was headed against the Wycombe goalkeeper by Aasgaard at full stretch.
It was virtually one-way traffic at this point with another Aasgaard header, this time from a Tyrese Francois cross, forcing an absolutely superb save from Ravizzoli.
However, Wycombe almost added a second in stoppage time, only for Brandon Hanlan to be denied by a blinding save from Tickle.
