- Coventry’s last seven Championship home games have produced fewer than three goals
- Southampton’s last four Championship fixtures have featured just seven goals
- Recommended bet: Under 2.5 goals

Coventry City’s resurgence continued last Friday as they defeated a poor Birmingham side, but they may have to up their level if they are to continue their good run against promotion-chasing Southampton on Wednesday.

The Saints sit fourth in the Championship table and are entering the hectic festive period in excellent form, hoping to extend their unbeaten run to 13 matches on Tuesday.

Team news

Coventry’s top scorer Matt Godden missed Friday’s win over Birmingham and is a doubt again for this one, potentially joining Fabio Tavares on the sidelines and leading to what could be an unchanged line-up from Mark Robins.

Flynn Downes was out for Southampton at the weekend, but should return to the midfield on Tuesday, with Will Smallbone and Ryan Fraser both expected to come into the starting line-up too.

Juan Larios, Ross Stewart and Kamaldeen Sulemana are all injured.

The stats

Each of Coventry’s last seven Championship home games have produced fewer than three goals.

Southampton’s last four Championship fixtures have featured just seven goals and under 2.5 goals has landed in each of their last four fixtures.

Coventry have only scored more than one goal in one of their last seven home games.

Prediction

Coventry made it three wins from their last four games on Friday night as they beat Birmingham, but Southampton should prove a sterner test than many of their recent opponents and a tight game is expected at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

All three of these recent victories have come against sides below them in the table and, while they have proven a defensively stubborn side at home, they lack a certain edge going forward and the likely absence of top-scorer Godden will not help matters on Wednesday.

The Sky Blues have scored more than one goal in just one of their last seven at home, but have conceded a mere four goals in that run and, despite sitting 15th in the table, harbour the joint-fourth best defensive record in the division.

Southampton, chasing promotion after extending their unbeaten run to 12 games at the weekend, have been solid at the back themselves.

They have conceded only two goals in their last six outings and have shipped more than one goal in just one of their last 12.

With under 2.5 goals landing in each of Coventry’s last seven home games and in each of Southampton’s last four matches, goals could be in short supply on Wednesday.
