Newcastle fought back from being reduced to 10 men to open their Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Southampton and now head to Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Cherries came from behind to draw 1-1 at Nottingham Forest, with Antoine Semenyo equalising after former Magpie Chris Wood had broken the deadlock.

Joelinton was the hero for Newcastle against the Saints. Eddie Howe's side missed the Brazilian's energy from midfield last season, and his ability to break the lines could help his side edge another entertaining game at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth are expected to be without Enes Unal (foot), Tyler Adams (back) and David Brooks (shoulder), but striker Evanilson is available to make his debut.

Central defender Marcos Senesi also did not feature at the City Ground, and summer arrival Dean Huijsen could continue alongside Illia Zabarnyi.

Newcastle will be without Fabian Schar who sits out after being sent off against Southampton.

With Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles injured, Lloyd Kelly could make his full debut against his former club after leaving the Cherries as a free agent earlier this summer.

The stats

Bournemouth recorded their first-ever home win against Newcastle last season, triumphing 2-0 in November. The pair then drew 2-2 at St James' Park.

Now-departed Dominic Solanke scored three of the Cherries' four goals against the Magpies last season, with Semeyo grabbing the other.

Andoni Iraola's side won just seven times at home last season, while Sunday's visitors only triumphed on six occasions on the road.

Both teams have scored in eight of the last nine league meetings.

Prediction

Injuries hurt Newcastle last season, but with Joelinton and others back and available, they could be set for another European push after missing out in 2023-24.

Former Cherries boss Howe will be aware that his team needs to improve away from home if they are to secure continental football for next term and will have been pleased with the steel they showed to beat Southampton following Schar's dismissal after only 28 minutes.

Opposite number Iraola will have also been delighted to see his players respond after going behind at Forest.

The Spaniard may still feel the board have work to do in the transfer market ahead of Friday's deadline, including potentially finding some backup to support Solanke's replacement, Evanilson, while he settles into English football following his move from Porto. 

Bournemouth should still have enough to test a defence that is missing Schar and fellow first-choice partner Botman. However, there was a freshness and spirit about Howe's side against Southampton, with Joelinton's energy in midfield allowing them to play further up the field.

Hamstring and groin issues sidelined the 28-year-old for significant spells of last term, but they are a far better team with him available, and he could be the difference at the Vitality.
