Aston Villa to win and over 2.5 goals

West Ham have been on the end of some heavy defeats of late and they face another tough test when they travel to Aston Villa for FA Cup third-round action on Friday.

The Villans have failed to make it past the fourth round since they were beaten by Arsenal in the 2015 final but they will feel optimistic of enjoying a deep run given their impressive form this season.

Team news

Pau Torres, Diego Carlos, John McGinn and Jaden Philogene are expected to miss out through injury for Villa, who remain without the suspended Jhon Duran.

Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, Jean-Clair Todibo and Emerson Palmieri are all injury issues for West Ham, who could have Lukasz Fabianski back after a head injury.

The stats

Both teams have scored in nine of the last 10 meetings between these two teams, with Villa failing to keep a clean sheet in all of those fixtures.

Villa have lost just two of their 15 home games in all competitions this term, winning eight of those.

The Villans have a poor record in the FA Cup, having been knocked out in the third round in seven of the last eight editions.

West Ham have conceded nine goals in their last two outings, losing 5-0 at home to Liverpool and 4-1 at Manchester City.

Prediction

Villa have been rock solid at home this season, with Arsenal and Crystal Palace the only sides to have beaten them, and they should be too strong for a struggling West Ham side.

Unai Emery’s side have beaten the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Bologna at home and reproducing anything close to those efforts should be enough to see them overcome the Hammers.

West Ham have won just one of their last five matches, that coming against rock-bottom Southampton, and Julen Lopetegui is reportedly close to getting the sack.

The Hammers have conceded at least three goals on nine occasions this term and that fragile backline could be exposed by a Villa side boasting plenty of attacking threat.

Villa’s last six games have all gone over 2.5 goals and a repeat of that is fancied in a home win.
