Wrexham have signed free agent Steven Fletcher as they eye up promotion from League Two this season.

Fletcher has been without a club since leaving Dundee United in June and signs for his sixth club in the English football pyramid.

The veteran striker said: "Hopefully I can bring a lot of experience. I'm 36, I'm still fit and still raring to go.

"One of the biggest selling points was the ambition of the club and if I can help with that then great.

"I don't think you cannot see what has been happening at Wrexham. It's been a great experience for the fans, players and owners so hopefully we can continue that."

The former Scotland international brings Premier League pedigree to the Racecourse Ground, having scored 53 goals in 189 appearances in the top flight for Burnley, Wolves and Sunderland.

He also netted 38 times in 136 matches for Sheffield Wednesday and 12 in 82 for Stoke.

Upon signing the 33-cap Scot, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said: "I'm really pleased with the addition of Steve to the squad.

"He's missed football through pre-season but he's trained today with the lads and it's good to have him on board.

"His pedigree speaks for itself and he's played most of his career at a very high level. He's an excellent professional and that's really important to fit in with the group here."

The Red Dragons — co-owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Ryan McElhenney — sit 13th in the League Two table ahead of Saturday's clash with Doncaster, having won two of their first six matches since promotion last term.
